The Mirror of Magic: Animating Artforms through Ritual and Visionary Practice is a five-day intensive program that bridges academic research on esoteric traditions in art with hands-on, practical workshops designed to enhance technical skills for contemporary art practice. Drawing inspiration from surrealist artist Kurt Seligmann’s seminal book, The Mirror of Magic, this course focuses on magick, symbolism, and artistic creation, offering participants an opportunity to approach esoteric concepts through both theory and practice in a considered way.
Drawing Down The Moon: The Crossroads of Surrealism, Magical Practice and Material Form is a 5-day intensive program held in a classroom situation at Berlin Art Institute. The masterclass focuses on the handmade, haptic experience with material, and explores the potential of linking esoteric frameworks to particular artistic mediums. In this program we will question how an artist uses materiality to represent unseen worlds. The program is structured around esoteric principles as its foundation and framework, ‘drawing down’ elusive ideas into material form. The masterclass is designed to pass on technical knowledge around specialist art methods such as metal clay, silk painting, frottage, gelatin monoprinting and three-dimensional collage. These unusual material techniques are paired with individual themes covered: construction of magical objects, thought forms and the practice of surrealist automatism. The masterclass also provides theoretical and historical background on art that engages with the history of Western Esotericism. The subjects covered include: magical objects, spiritualist art, surrealism and the contemporary representations of magick in art.
A LIBRARY OF IDEAS: The Art and Craft of Artists’ Books
An artwork can take infinite forms, much like a book. When an artist merges these two – treating the book as a work of art – it creates a flexible framework that fosters autonomy, freedom, experimentation, and research. The book becomes a space for inquiry, allowing the artist to engage in writing, drawing, and material exploration while maintaining a structured yet adaptable format. It also serves as a means of circumventing institutional constraints, offering an alternative to traditional gallery systems, disseminating ideas, and producing affordable works that can reach audiences beyond conventional art spaces. This summer school course focuses on the independent art practice of creating books as artworks. Rooted in avant-garde traditions—from the self-published books of the Dadaists and Surrealists to the Italian Futurists and the Fluxus movement—this practice resists the digital, embracing the tactile and bridging historical and contemporary approaches.
